Funding roundup

Arizona’s Pima Community College (PCC) and the University of Arizona will receive more than $1.3 million in grants for five years to fund Upward Bound programs at the two institutions. The funding will help to provide, among other things, tutoring and career counseling for low-income students. The grants come from the U.S. Department of Education.

Illinois

Illinois Eastern Community College (IECC) will use a $50,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration to provide advanced mine rescue and basic firefighting techniques for mine rescue teams. A new simulated mine, a burn tunnel and a facility with live video of mine training simulations will be used for the training.

Maryland

College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) Make an Impact Campaign will make a bigger impact on students, thanks to an $80,000 pledge from Old Line Bank. The funds will go to student scholarships. The Old Line Bank STEP-UP Program Annual Scholarship is focused on providing scholarships to low-income CSM students.

Old Line Bank has been a strong supporter of CSM, providing an annual business program scholarship. The bank was also one of the first sponsors of CSM’s men’s lacrosse program, which launched in 2014, and supports summer performances and the annual golf classic.

CSM hopes to raise $10 million during its three-year fundraising campaign, which ends in 2018.

New Mexico

Mesalands Community College will be able to provide more hands-on training for wind energy technology students thanks to a donation of a digital low-resistance ohmmeter. The equipment came from Megger, a Pennsylvania-based manufacturer of portable electrical testing equipment. The ohmmeter is used to test the installation of conductors during the commissioning of wind turbines. It’s is also part of the maintenance plan of wind turbines and is used when an electrical problem is suspected.
