New CEOs

Marty Cavalluzzi will serve as the next president of Olympic College in Washington beginning in early 2018 and pending contract negotiations. He is currently president of Pierce College Puyallup, which he has led since 2013. Previously, Cavalluzzi was executive vice president for instruction and chief academic officer at Edmonds Community College from 2006 to 2013. His career in higher education spans three decades, beginning in 1986 as full-time instructor at the Coast Institute in California.

Thomas F. Wright will be the next president of Southwest Virginia Community College, starting January 8. He currently serves as vice president for finance and advancement at Cleveland State Community College (Tennessee), as well as the executive director of the college’s education foundation. Wright previously was the college’s interim vice president for academic affairs. Prior to that, Wright worked for a decade at Appalachian State University, rising to the position of director of housing operations. He began his higher education career at Middle Tennessee State University, where he served in several roles, including interim assistant dean of students.

President emeritus

Recently retired Highline College President Jack Bermingham, who served at the college for 22 years — more than 10 as its CEO — was named president emeritus by the college’s board of trustees. He retired in August.

Appointments

Ivan Smith is the College of Southern Maryland’s new associate vice president of human resources and payroll. Most recently, he was an adjunct professor at Webster University in Texas, where he taught courses in human resources management.
