Dive into the Summer 2010 Swim Programs

The Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department is offering a variety of swim programs this summer. Swim lessons, swim leagues, adaptive aquatics, aqua fitness, guard start, and splash parties will be available at City swimming pools. Summer swim season runs through August 8, 2010. For specific program registration schedules and requirements, call the Parks & Recreation Office at 361-826-3460 or visit www.ccparkandrec.com (click 'Programs').

Swimming is a near-perfect form of exercise. It is non-weight bearing and imposes little stress on the bones and joints; it improves cardiovascular conditioning; it is an effective weight-control exercise; and it has been found to improve relaxation. Swimming also uses most of the major muscle groups, and strengthens both the upper and lower body. Pregnant women in particular benefit since swimming builds up abdominal and shoulder muscles, areas that are especially taxed by carrying a baby. Research has also found that water exercise can also reduce the joint stiffness, high blood pressure, and discomfort associated with pregnancy.

Swimming Lessons: Lessons are available for all ages, 6 months to adult. The American Red Cross's Pre-School Aquatics Levels 1-3, and Learn-to-Swim program Levels 1-6 includes comfort, confidence, swimming strokes, and swimming and safety skills. Swimmers graduate to the next level based on skill rather than age. We also offer Parent/Tot and Adult classes based

on demand. Cost: $40/session at all City pools. Registration is ongoing at all participating pools Wednesday-Sunday from 3pm-6pm. Call the pool of your choice for times and dates.

Adaptive Aquatics: Games and lessons in the water for all ages. A parent or guardian must accompany children. Program offered on Saturdays, now through August 7, 2010, from 11:30am-2:30pm at Collier Pool only (3801 Harris Drive). The fee is $40 per participant. For more information, call 852-0243.

Aqua Fitness (On-going program): Water aerobics is a virtually impact free workout that conditions all the major muscle groups as well as body composition. At the same time, it is a wonderful way to get your cardio and strengthen your heart. So relieve the stress and take the plunge today! This fitness program is designed and offered to youth ages 14 and older as well as for men and women of all ages. There is no sign-up or membership fee and lifeguards are always on duty. Classes are offered at three public pools: 1) Corpus Christi Natatorium (3202 Cabaniss Parkway) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6pm7pm (year-round); 2) West Guth Pool (9705 Up River Road) on Wednesdays and Fridays from 6pm-7pm (Summer only); and 3) Collier Pool (3801 Harris Dr.) on Mondays-Fridays from 8am-9am (audio-tape guided, year-round). The fee is $4 per class day or you can purchase an 8-class punch card for $24. For more information, call the Corpus Christi Natatorium at 878-2337, West Guth Pool at 241-3741, or Collier Pool at 852-0243 between 3pm and 6pm.

Junior GuardStart Camp: Not old enough to be a lifeguard? Come take GuardStart and get a head start! The American Red Cross GuardStart program is designed to prepare youth ages 11-14 to take Red Cross Lifeguarding certification programs and for future work as lifeguards. The GuardStart program helps participants build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills that they will need to be responsible lifeguards. Lessons are grouped into five main areas: prevention, fitness, response, leadership and professionalism. The upcoming GuardStart camps will run Wednesday-Sunday, from 2pm-5pm during July 2010 (see schedule below).

Cost is $60 per participant per session (a $10 late registration fee will be applied if registered after registration date). For more information, call the pool offering the course or 361-826-3460.
REMAINING SUMMER 2010 SCHEDULE:
