Even with great colleges, students 'have got to want it' to succeed

To drive home how critical community colleges are to training and retraining workers, President Barack Obama detailed his chat with employees of a precision-tool company during his town-hall meeting in Ohio on Friday.
The president, who in the morning visited EMC Precision Machining, told the audience at Lorain County Community College (LCCC) about a group of workers at the company who several years ago were laid off and decided to retrain at LCCC. Using federal job training funds, the workers enrolled in a six-month, 12-hour-a-day program—in addition to working eight hours a day, Obama said. (The workers found temporary jobs to pay the bills while they went to college.)
The president said he told the story to point out how important community colleges are in preparing the country’s workforce and to highlight that it was federal funding that helped the men pay for their education and training.
There was also a third reason the president told the story: “Even if you’ve got a great community college, and you’ve got the financing, you’ve also got to want it,” Obama said.
Community college advocates appreciate the president's support through such visits to two-year colleges.
"President Obama got to see first hand that we’re not waiting for anyone else to drive our economic development," said LCCC President Roy Church. "Through partnerships, LCCC is stepping up and doing what it can with the resources available to make a constructive difference for our community."
Church was referring to the Great Lakes Innovation and Development Enterprise (GLIDE), a partnership between the college, Lorain County commissioners, the Lorain County Chamber of Commerce and the Ohio Department of Development. Founded in 2001 at LCCC, the comprehensive regional innovation center and business incubator has helped to start more than 60 new companies, creating more than 500 new jobs, Church said.
