New CEOs

Michael Dreith has been named the seventh president of John A. Logan College (Illinois), effective July 1. Dreith, a native of southwestern Illinois, currently serves as president of Western Texas College. Prior to his hire there in 2007, Dreith was president of Frontier College from 2001-2007. He is also the first Illinois community college graduate to become an Illinois community college president.

Lori Gaskin will serve as superintendent/president of the Santa Barbara Community College District (California), effective July 1. Gaskin currently is president of West Valley College (California). Previously, she served in a number of academic leadership positions at Lake Tahoe Community College, including vice president of academic affairs and student services and dean of instruction. 

Scott Morgan has been named acting president of Spokane Community College (SCC) in Washington, effective July 1. He currently is chief executive officer of the Community Colleges of Spokane Institute for Extended Learning (IEL) and will continue in that capacity. Prior to joining IEL in 2007, Morgan served as chief operations officer for the college district.

José Ortiz was named chancellor of the Peralta Community College District (California), effective July 1. He has served as superintendent/president of Allan Hancock College (California) for the past seven years. Ortiz previously served as a vice president at Laney College and in various administrator posts at Solano Community College (California), Anne Arundel Community College (Maryland), the University of Maryland and the University of Puerto Rico.

Rob Watts has been named interim president of Georgia Perimeter College​, effective May 14. This is his second stint as interim president of the college, previously serving from 2005-06. Since January, Watts has served as interim president of Georgia Highlands College. He also served as interim president there from 2000-01. Watts has an extensive career in the state university system. He was its chief operating officer until earlier this year, a position he held since 2006.

Stelfanie Williams is now president of Vance-Granville Community College​ (VGCC) in North Carolina. She came to VGCC after several years at Central Carolina Community College (North Carolina), where she most recently served as vice president for economic and community development. Williams also served in several administrative roles at Sandhills Community College, including dean of continuing education.

Kudos

Brent Knight, president of Lansing Community College (Michigan), has received an honorary doctorate of public service from Ferris State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1968. Among his many service efforts, Knight was chairman of Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Mich., during its inaugural year, helping to raise $20 million for its construction.

Appointments

Lee Lambert, president of Shoreline Community College (Washington), was recently named chair of the board of directors of the National Coalition of Certification Centers, a group of educational institutions and industry partners dedicated to creating strong partnerships. Lambert, who last month was named to the board of directors of the American Association of Community Colleges, said the core idea of the NC3 partners is to develop, implement and sustain certifications that are industry-recognized and portable for students.

Kent Kay has been appointed vice chancellor for finance and administration at St. Louis Community College (Missouri). He currently serves as vice president for finance and administration at National Louis University in Illinois. Previously, Kay served for five years as chief financial officer at Missouri State University. His higher education experience includes six years in the University of Alabama System.

H. Neil Matkin has been appointed executive vice president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System​, effective July 1. Previously, he served for nearly four years as president of San Jacinto College in Texas. Prior to that, Matkin was vice chancellor for information technology services at the Virginia Community College System.
