Mitjl Capet and
Gena Proulx


Mitjl Capet has been named president of Reedley College (California). He previously served as executive assistant to the chancellor at the College of the Canyons/Santa Clarita Community College District (California). His prior duties also included serving as assistant superintendent/vice president of instruction at College of the Canyons.


Gena Proulx, president of Joliet Junior College (JJC) in Illinois, died Aug. 12 after a three-year battle with fallopian tube cancer. She was 66. Proulx came to JJC after serving six years as president of the Dundalk and Essex campuses at the Community College of Baltimore County in Maryland. In 2008, Proulx spearheaded JJC’s master plan, which represented the largest physical changes to the main campus in its 40 years. Through her vision and leadership, seven major construction projects have taken shape across the college to streamline student services and provide the space for programs and training to address critical job shortages. She is survived by her husband and three adult daughters.

New trustees

At the Arizona Western College District, Dennis Booth, owner/operator of Booth Machinery, Inc., and Doug Mellon, a farmer in Yuma, Ariz., have been appointed to the district’s governing board.

DeKalb Technical College (soon to be Georgia Piedmont Technical College) welcomes three new members to its board of directors. Tony Scipio, chief of police for the City of Clarkston; Kristi Carmen, senior vice president of regulatory excellence for JTC Education Holdings/Medtech; and Sadie Dennard, external affairs manager for Georgia Power's Metro East region. 

The board of directors of the Wake Techical Community College Foundation (North Carolina) welcome new directors Douglas Baker, Douglas Boyd, Adrienne Cole, Patrick Lindsey and state Rep. Tom Murry. Baker helped start a company that specializes in the storage of research samples for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Boyd is an emergency management expert. Cole is business development manager for a project management and construction firm. Lindsey is an audit partner for an accounting firm. Murry is a freshman state lawmaker. He is also an attorney and pharmacist and is part-owner of a pharmacy.


Donna Berry has been named vice president of administrative services at Reedley College (California). She previously served as director of administrative services at Porterville College.

Allen Dooley has been appointed dean of business at Santa Ana College in California. Previously, he served as acting dean of enrollment management and academic support at Pasadena City College (PCC). He has also served as a professor of business and computer technology and acting dean of business and computer technology at PCC. Earlier, he served as PCC’s school-to-career coordinator.

Charles Guthrie is the new director of athletics at Clark College in Washington. Guthrie comes from the California State University, Los Angeles, where he served as deputy director of athletics.

Russell Litke is the new vice president for administrative services at San Juan College in New Mexico. He previously served as controller at the college and as chief financial officer at Navajo Agricultural Products Industry.

Calandra Stringer has been named associate dean of curriculum at Tallahassee Community College in Florida. Over her career at the college, Stringer has taught mathematics for eight years and served as director of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Center for six years.

Nancy Vader-McCormick is now coordinator of the Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence at Delta College (Michigan). The appointment is for a three-year term. Vader-McCormick is a leader on campus, most notably as director of academic service learning. 

Paul Van Ast is now director of operations of the Orange County One-Stop Centers, which are employment centers run in partnership between Coastline Community College (California) and the local workforce investment board. He has more than 20 years of experience in education, employment and training programs, including 10 years of experience at one-stop centers in Los Angeles and Houston. 

Kelly Zúñiga has been elected to serve a three-year term as trustee-at-large on the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) board of trustees. Zúñiga, who is executive director of the Houston Community College Foundation, most recently served on CASE’s National Committee for Institutionally Related Foundations and is a current member of CASE’s Community College Foundation Advisory Group.


Mike Miller, director of facilities, planning and management at Butte College in California, is retiring. When he started working at Butte—which he attended as a student—24 years ago, it was as a member of the grounds maintenance crew.
