Kudos

David N. Johnson, president of Johnston Community College (JCC) in North Carolina, is the 2017 recipient of the I.E. Ready Distinguished Leader Award, which is presented annually by North Carolina State University’s College of Education to honor one of its alumni for exceptional leadership at a community college. One of Johnson’s biggest accomplishments during his presidency at JCC is implementing the “one college” organizational philosophy which aims to alleviate institutional silos by merging curriculum and continuing education divisions and services into one instructional unit.

Mark Thomas, chief financial officer and vice president of administrative services for Madison Area Technical College in Wisconsin, has received the 2017 Outstanding Chief Business Officer Award from the Community College Business Officers. The award recognizes Thomas for his effectiveness, participation in college-wide strategic planning and implementation of policies supporting the college’s mission. It also honors his community leadership, service and involvement.

Appointments

Nancy Calkins will serve as executive director of the Guilford Technical Community College Foundation in North Carolina. Previously, she served as the foundation’s assistant director for three years.

Catherine “Kate” Dumond joins Houston Community College (HCC) Southwest College as the new associate dean of student success and engagement. She previously served at HCC at its P-16 director, coordinating the dual-credit programming for 14 Houston Independent School District high schools.

Jeffery Gibbs has been named dean of the Oviedo Campus at Seminole State College of Florida. Previously, Gibbs was a senior administrative leader at Florida Southwestern State College’s Hendry-Glades Center and served as an academic dean and faculty member at Zane State College in Ohio.

Kumar Lakhavani is the new director of information technology at Cape Fear Community College in North Carolina. He previously served in IT at Alamance Community College and Piedmont Community College.

Kenneth Malagiere was named executive director of the Ocean County College Foundation in New Jersey. He previously served on foundation’s board of trustees for seven years.
