The road to convention: Marching toward the future

The 2017 American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Convention in April is the place to learn about models of student success. Below, AACC board member and San Jacinto College District Chancellor Brenda Hellyer describes what she is looking forward to this year.

The 2012 AACC convention was especially memorable for Brenda Hellyer, chancellor of the San Jacinto College District in Texas, because that’s when the association released its “Reclaiming the American Dream: Community Colleges and the Nation’s Future” report, which has served as a blueprint for U.S. community college to improve student success.

“We saw with this rollout that community colleges are doing incredible work, but there is much more to be done,” she said.

For the upcoming convention April 22-25 in New Orleans, Hellyer is especially interested in learning how AACC’s Pathways project, which builds on the recommendations of the report, is progressing and to hear from colleges participating in the initiative, as well as other stakeholders.

“I am excited for these discussions at the 2017 convention,” she said.
