The theme for the 2017 American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Convention April 22-25 in New Orleans is “Community Colleges: America’s North Star,” as community colleges remain a fixed point by which people can set their compasses to navigate change successfully. Below, AACC board member and Brookdale Community College President Maureen Murphy recalls when she attended the AACC convention in Boston nearly 12 years ago.

For her first AACC convention in 2005, Maureen Murphy escorted her college’s All-USA Academic Team winner.

“The warm and supportive reception both the student and I received made me eager for more,” said Murphy, who was a vice president at the time.

The AACC conventions since have continued to inspire and energize Murphy, who is now president of Brookdale Community College in New Jersey.

“The connections you make with your fellow presidents are an invaluable resource and support network,” she said.

Friday deadline: January 27 is the last day for the early-bird registration discount for the 2017 AACC Convention in New Orleans April 22-25.
